Now
that you’re engaged, you already know that
wedding planning will take up a lot of your time,
energy, and normal thought processes. Suddenly,
your life is all about the wedding and people
start asking all kinds of questions about your
plans. You may be surprised to find that this
time can be a fulfilling, connected experience.
First
off, enjoy your engagement. If you have a year
or more to plan, give yourself (and your fiance)
time to let it all sink in. Begin by envisioning
the type of wedding that fits both of you. Browse
through magazines and websites to get ideas of
different weddings you like. Talk to family and
friends to share your excitement, and former brides
about their weddings.
Then
get organized. No matter how you handle other
areas in your life, your wedding is something
you will want to be organized with from the start.
There are many options to stay on top of your
planning: computer spreadsheets and calendars,
files, binders with labeled dividers, and internet
checklists. Register on a wedding website to get
started, then work with a system that makes sense
to you.
It’s
a good idea to have at least 3 vendors as choices
in each category. As you browse their websites
and talk to them personally, eliminate those that
don’t appeal to you. Save all quotes and
paperwork in your notebook or files. Write down
what you like and dislike about each one, including
pricing, style, personality, and wedding knowledge.
Use
Email when you can—you’ll have written
information and can make the most of your time.
You may not know exactly what kind of dress, music,
food, or flowers you want. Don’t worry;
once you begin speaking to vendors, you’ll
find yourself narrowing down your specifics—I
had no idea what kind of flowers I wanted until
I spoke to a florist and realized my comments
were leading me in a certain direction.
Make
the most of your appointments by coming prepared
with a visual idea of what you want and the amount
you are comfortable spending. Bring a friend or
family member for an outsider’s opinion—it’s
easy to get carried away in all the extravagant
options. The more prepared you are with your wedding
vision, the easier it is to recognize appropriate
options.
